Quick answers to help guide your Cataract eye Surgery
What is a cataract?

A cataract is the clouding of your natural lens that causes blurry or hazy vision. It’s a common, age-related condition and can also occur earlier in patients with diabetes or prolonged sun exposure.

Surgery is advised when the cataract starts to interfere with daily activities like reading, driving, or recognizing faces — and glasses no longer help.
No. The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia with numbing eye drops. You’ll feel no pain, only mild pressure or cool sensations.
Yes — for patients who are anxious, uncomfortable, or fearful of eye surgery, cataract surgery can also be done safely under general anesthesia (where you’ll be asleep during the procedure). This option is available at Columbia Asia Hospital Puchong and is generally covered by insurance if medically indicated.

The procedure usually takes 10–20 minutes, and patients can go home the same day

■ Do’s:
• Use your prescribed eye drops as directed.
• Keep your eye clean and dry.
• Wear the protective shield or glasses provided.
• Attend all follow-up appointments.
• Rest and avoid straining your eyes.

■ Don’ts:
• Do not rub or press your eye.
• Avoid water entering the eye for at least 1 week.
• Avoid heavy lifting, bending forward, or vigorous exercise for 2 weeks.
• Avoid dusty environments or swimming for at least 2–3 weeks.

Most patients see clearer within 1–3 days, with further improvement as healing continue over the next few weeks.

This depends on the type of intraocular lens (IOL) chosen — monofocal lenses correct distance or near vision, while multifocal/premium lenses reduce the need for glasses.
You’ll receive hospital-grade safety, advanced technology, and personalised care under Dr. Jayanthi, an experienced cataract and medical retina specialist known for a gentle and thorough approach.
